It's the environment from a game idea I've had knocking around for a looooooooooooooooong time. The premise of the game is that a zombie outbreak occurs, and shit goes downhill from there. Typical zombie story. But this is for an RPG. There have been RPG's which have incorporated zombies as part of them, but as far as I am aware, there are none which are solely based on a zombie outbreak, and nothing else.

The Area of the game I'll be creating is the strong hold area. It's an area of the city which has been deserted, destroyed, and then repopulated and secured, with some buildings be used how they were meant, and others being repurposed. I would like to have the whole city on show, with the surrounding wooded areas, and smaller villages past that, but for my final project, I'll be focusing on just the stronghold area. I've done a little bit of prototyping work already, which may or may not make it into the full level, just to get me back into the level design process, and to work on my architectural skills. I can map pretty well, but mapping theory changes depending on the type of level. Luckily my mappin skills mostly focus on open ended levels, which are ideal for roleplaying in. So this city should fit my skills, and allow me to show them off.

I've already put together a character concept, and I've been working on my level plan in Illustrator. My Level Plan will be printed out as a series of A3 prints, with a print for each height level of the map.I will possibly have another series of A4 prints with the plan of the interiors of each individual building, or at least the main housing block.Womblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01796138268335516331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2563990998237398307.post-33609865629273837082009-04-01T21:56:00.003+01:002009-04-01T22:16:08.879+01:00Oh damn it's been a long time.Even though no-one reads this, I might aswell update it since I haven't done so in like, FOREVER.

Been working on a few projects. My favorite of which being the level design project. As you may know, I fancy myself as a bit of a level designer, and naturally, it really shun through with the level design project. It was using the Unreal 2.5 engine, which I did surprisingly well with considering I hadn't touched an unreal editor in roughly 5/6 years. Once I got started, everything came flowing back. I remembered every reason I loved the unreal engine, all the nice tools, the nice 3D viewport, the intuitive controls, the nice import system. However, all the negative points came flowing back with them. Unreal 2.5 is the buggiest, piece of S**t I've ever come across, preceeded only by the version of after effects we have at college. If you try to manipulate more than one light at a time, it crashes, if you try to compile it often locks up. If you put a light too close the wall, it casts a shadow of itself. Just lots of little bugs which remind me of why I switched over to the source engine. Thank you valve for putting in the time to make sure all your tools work how they should. Epic, you should be ashamed. It's a nice engine when it works, and the benefits outweigh the negatives, but for me, theres no point using it when theres a perfectly good source engine to be had.

With that out of the way, I'll explain a little about my map. I came up with the idea for a adventure/horror game, where you're a curious young man who goes snooping around an abandoned silo in a military base near his house. Upon entering, you become trapped, and have to look around for a way out, solving puzzles along the way and generally pissing your pants. I went about looking around for pictures of a particular type of silo which housed the Titan II missile, which was used in the cold war. I found some pretty cool stuff, lots of pictures taken by people similar to my character, only they didn't get stuck. They showed a very dark, dank underground silo wihch was slowly becoming flooded. It was very atmospheric, and if you were trapped in there, you'd piss your pants, because it truly did look terrifying. Whoever took the photos had some serious balls. whilst searching through the photos, I found some blueprints for the bases, which I took, and based my level plan on. I kept the whole feel of the base, and the way it conencted all the parts, but changed it around for the sake of gameplay.

Realism is something you learn about only through practise when mapping. When trying to recreate a place you've seen in real life, it's better to base it on the place than to recreate it, because alot of the time, it doesn't make for fun gameplay. The plan for the silo had alot of incredibly long thin service tunnels and access shafts which were so thin and low down that it would've been hard to navigate, and harder to enjoy playing through. So what I did, was I shortened down the tunnels, and generally kept most of the features, but condensed them into a smalled area, with a strong overall theme throughout which matched the photos I found. I also gave each area a main feature. Giving each major area it's own distinctive feature help to keep the level varied, and also gives the player a feel for where they are. Knowing where you are in relation to other things is very important, especially in adventure games, because you'll often need to find your way around a puzzle quickly, so giving big visual hints makes this easier.

I very much enjoyed working on the level, and for my final project, I'm recreating the level in the latest version of the engine, expanding the level, and giving it a coat of polish. More on this later... If I remember.
Womblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01796138268335516331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2563990998237398307.post-61151556417761698592008-06-16T21:55:00.003+01:002008-06-17T18:54:36.223+01:00Unit 5 ResearchI guess it's time to get my research up onto my blog for this unit. It's not due till Thursday, but I'd rather get it in sooner so that I can finish off my other projects.

Well, first off, the web page about optical camouflage and light emitting fibers which I showed in my presentation has disappeared, and the only trace to it which I could find is in Japanese, http://tachilab.org/modules/projects/rpt.html. That is the front page, which is in English, however, the link further down the page links to a Japanese page, which is a shame, because it was quite interesting, and made up a large part of my research. However, it does show some pictures of the technology being used. The technology basically worked by using very tiny sensors on the clothes the technology was used on, in this case, a trench coat, and they outputted the colours they were picking up on the opposite side of the coat, giving the illusion of being slightly invisible.

This technology was also used in Metal Gear Solid 1, and during parts of Metal Gear Solid 2.

"Metal Gear Solid/The Twin Snakes
In MGS and TTS, The stealth camouflage can be unlocked by giving into Revolver Ocelot's torture and clearing the game, where Otacon will give Solid Snake the stealth camouflage. This will allow the player to use the item the next time they play the game. However, if the player endures the torture, Meryl Silverburgh will give Snake the bandana.

Otacon uses the stealth camouflage though most of the game to avoid detection from the Genome Soldiers and mentions having made five of them. The other four are used by an unknown group of soldiers to keep an elevator in place during Snake's fight against Liquid Snake's Hind D and later ambush Snake in the style of the Four Horsemen in the same elevator. Grey Fox also appears to have a built-in version of the stealth camouflage in his exo-skeleton."

-Taken From the Metal Gear Wiki.

Other Technology I looked into was PAN technology. PAN is a technology which uses your body as a transmitter, and can be used to unlock certain things, or start cars, or do things which would usualy require your authorisation through other methods. It can be used in 2 forms, an implant, or a small device which is carried close to your body, like a card. When you go near a reciever near a door, or cash point you wish to pay at, or whatever, it will perform the neccesarry action.

Copy Pasta:

What is IntraBody Communication

The term Intra-Body-Communication or BodyNFC describes the data exchange between stationary or mobile devices using the human body as a conductor or capacitive area. The Detection and Interaction can work in a passive mode, there is no transceiver necessary.

There are different synonyms used for this wireless communication, based on capacitive fields. The Metal Gear Series uses the same technology in the form of a card carried close to the body, to open doors.

I then looked into Rail Gun technology. Rail gun technology is much more simple than it seems. You have 2 metallic objects, a barrel(or rail), and the ammunition. You pass a current between them, and a magnetic field propells the object outwards at an incredible speed. Railguns have been available since WW2. In world war 2, they were typically much bigger than the ones in use today. They were rail mounted, and required 2 powerful rail engines to pull them. Todays ones vary in size, from huge cannons uses on battleships, to relatively small ones the size of cars. The technology has been advanced somewhat, and has produced working handheld deviced, although they use very slightly different methods of achiveing the same effect. These are called coilguns.

Rail Gun Link Here, I would've copy and pasta'd it like the rest of my research, but there's too much to put up here without it becoming a mess. In Metal Gear Solid 1, Metal Gear REX has a rail gun mounted on it, which was quite large. In Metal Gear Solid 2, a character called Fortune carries a Rail Gun, which despirt being quite large, was still a weapon which could be used by hand, and carried. This shows how technology moved on between the games, as it did in real life.and how instead of the media influencing society, society, and technology in general influences the media.

Womblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01796138268335516331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2563990998237398307.post-31632663995523390692008-05-01T14:15:00.003+01:002008-05-01T14:29:32.425+01:00Stickam lolHi thar.

Last night I was working on my music video. I decided to scrap my original idea and start from scratch. I've divided it into 3 parts. The first part is Space invaders, but I'm animating it in flash, to the timings of the music, which I'm making as I go along, so that it fits perfectly with the video. The second half is Tetris, which I'll animate and render in 3DS Max, which will also have the bricks falling and moving in time to the music, and the third part will be live action.

I've had multiple ideas for the live action part. I think I'm either going to use the footage I already shot, of me and my friends playing a song in a garage, and overlay the Rock Band notes flying in as we play, or I could get me and a friend dressed up as Pac-man and a Ghost chasing each other though Churchill Square. I'd love to do the latter, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to make a Pac-Man and Ghost suit. I'll try, and if I succeed, I'll do that, however, it might be better to play it safe and use my original footage and go with the Rock Band /Guitar Hero idea.

Whilst having a break last night, I also set up Stickam. It's basically Myspace, but instead of have a profile picture, or videos or stuff, you set up your web cam to stream live footage over the web. So, now you can watch me do boring things like work, or not be in the room, or stare at my monitor, or play something on the PS2. Oh what fun.

It's more an experiment to see if anyone will actually watch it, or if it'll get any attention at all. I already had one girl trying to flirt with me. However, I can't take online dating, or flirting online, or anything like that seriously, so I proceeded to the whole "I put on my robe and wizard hat" routine. She didn't appreciate it, and she probably didn't know that I'd be posting it on my blog. So hi Aural in California.

You can see what I'm doing right now by scrolling down to "Womble Vision" at the bottom of the page. It doesn't always default to the web feed, so click the button which kinda looks like a web cam. It's not obvious, but since the others are obvious what they are, it shouldn't be too hard to work out using the process of elimination.
Womblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01796138268335516331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2563990998237398307.post-9106106784447115872008-04-23T14:23:00.004+01:002008-04-23T15:17:25.949+01:00Animal MovementI've got to get some research done on animal movement. I wasn't really sure what to do, since you cant really get the idea by reading something about it. So I went out and found some videos. I thought that I'd focus on the way cats move, since I have a cat,and theres bound to be alot of videos of cats on the internet. Since I have to animate an animal moving, I thought I'd focus on a few common movements that a cat would make. I thought I'd go with Walking, Running, Jumping.

The first video I found on youtube, was very useful. It's a video of someones cat, which they put on a treadmill, and the camera just follows the cat while it slowly speeds up on the treadmill.

From a link onwards from that video, I found another video of a cat on a tread mill. Only this one is from the front, instead of the side, which shows how the cat moves from side to side as it walks.

I then moved onto Jumping. There weren't that many good videos showing cats jumping, mostly just videos of cats being dumb. However, after a while of searching, I found a video of a cat jumping after it's toy in slow motion. It shows how it's back legs push off into the air really well, since in full speed, it would be very hard to see.

I think at some point, I'll record my cat doing stuff too, since I'll be able to observe her better than someone's cat on youtube.
Womblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01796138268335516331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2563990998237398307.post-88387876770863317282008-04-23T00:11:00.004+01:002008-04-23T00:24:08.883+01:00Elfen LiedAbout 20 minutes ago, I finished watching the final episode of Elfen Lied. I'd say it's the greatest thing I've ever watched. Only 1 game I've ever played, Metal Gear Solid 1, has come close to comparison, but even then, still cant compare. I was going to play a game, but there's no point. Nothing can come close to Elfen lied. The story is so dark, the characters are so well thought, the first 7 minutes are so violent.

Elfen Lied is an Animé, which tells the story of a girl named Lucy. She is a genetic mutant, called a Diclonius (Not the dinosaur). The Diclonius have horns on their heads, which look like cat ears. They also have a set of invisible hands, called Vectors, which they can use to lift things, or, as the first 7 minutes show, horribly butcher people. Lucy was imprisoned in a research facility, for testing. She is released and fights, or more like slaughters, her way out of the facility, before being shot in the head, and falling into the sea. She is washed up on shore, and found by Khota and Yuka. Khota and Yuka are cousins, who start living together towards the beginning of the series. At this point, Lucy is found to have Amnesia (I think I'd be a bit forgetful after taking an anti tank round to the head...), and also posses' very little capability of speech. She is re-dubbed Nyu, because that is the only thing she says at the time, and is taken back to Khota and Yuka's house.

I leave it at that, since I don't really want to give anything major away. Just expect alot of violence, and one of the best storylines you'll ever witness.
Womblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01796138268335516331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2563990998237398307.post-8911054322405050082008-04-21T20:39:00.003+01:002008-04-21T20:44:53.266+01:00Flashmob!!!Well. After college, Craig, Bob, Patrick, and I got invited to a flashmob at Brighton station. We got there, and within about 10 minutes, about 200 people flooded into the station. A green balloon was released into the air to signal us to start clapping. So we randomly started to applaud people getting off of their trains. After about 1 minute, a red balloon went up to signal us to stop clapping, and leave. So within a minute, the whole station was left back to normal, at the dismay of the station workers.

I can't imagine what the workers must've thought, or the random people we were applauding. I think I'm going to arrange a flashmob at Churchill Square. However, mine will be more of a 4Chan Flash mob. That means dress code, a fitting mask for the occasion, and a strange internet meme. It's still floating around up the old noggin', but I'll post more details of it when I've spoken to a few people.
Womblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01796138268335516331noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2563990998237398307.post-9783762600182785652008-04-21T16:23:00.003+01:002008-04-21T16:47:54.259+01:00MANLY ADVERTISING!!! Deus Ex: Source. I'm thinking of releasing it episodically. It's very early on obviously. Not much work needs to be done in terms of level planning, since it's all there, same for artwork. Basically, it's a big face lift. Deus Ex is 10 years old now, but it still holds up pretty well. I've started out mapping the Pier you start on, and I'm working my way through the level. I've not gone into detail texturing yet, I'm just orange mapping it with dev textures so I can work on getting the layout and game play done before I go into detail.

Apart from the basic level design, I'm putting in a few little extras, nothing game changing, just little areas here and there. Really open up the world. Something I noticed in Deus Ex is that theres alot of trickery going on. for instance, the level with the Bar in it, the outside of the Bar is smaller than the Inside, but it's really well masked, so unless like me, you're looking for things like this, you wouldn't notice it. Same thing with the SuperTanker. The Source engine is less limited for size, so I can really go into detail, and make everything the size it should be.

The place I fall down with this is Coding, Textures, and Modeling. I can model basic stuff, but I can't UV map it, I can't model organic stuff like characters either. I can make basic textures, but nothing too professional looking. As far as coding goes, I kind of understand the theory behind it, but I cant actually program anything. I need an Inventory System. Also, since Deus Ex was an RPG as well as an FPS, I also need a leveling and experience system. Plus, if I'm thinking of releasing episodically, I need a way of it keep the stats between chapters.

I'm sure I can find someone, so for now, how some screenshots.

Womblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01796138268335516331noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2563990998237398307.post-49948622864907738702008-04-19T19:48:00.003+01:002008-04-19T19:56:20.410+01:00Lol VideoAlot of stuffs happened this week. I've been down St. Anne's Wells Park most days, killing my self, and nearly killing others around me. In the process I managed to get 2 of the biggest blisters I've ever had, one on each end of my foot, so I can't put shoes on. On top of that, I randomly got into another Band. I'm yet to practice with the full band yet, but the Bassist and Singer helped me out with my Music Video Project, along with my friend Kai.

On the subject of Music Video, I got the main meat of it filmed. Which is hilarious. It doesn't sound nearly as good as it did while we we're practicing, and Kai, Jamie(Bassist) and me are just looking down at our instruments and bobbing up and down, while Lawrence(the singer) is going crazy right at the front. It starts off with us Playing the intro to the song, and Lawrence isn't there, then it gets into the first verse, and he randomly pops up from underneath the camera, and starts going crazy. Lulz are plenty. I'm tempted to Super impose the Cookie Monster popping out of his bin over the top of him.
Womblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01796138268335516331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2563990998237398307.post-55200529750982253022008-04-12T12:15:00.002+01:002008-04-12T12:26:48.158+01:00W00T New Musac!!11!!@!I really should update this more often.

Well, the last couple of nights, I got kinda bored, so I started playing around in my music package, and decided to make a little song which sounded kinda like a chip tune. It's called "Chip Child of Mine". Can anyone guess what it's based on? Basically, I took the main guitar loop of Sweet Child of Mine, which anyone who doesn't know it should be shot, and remade it using NES(as in Nintendo Entertainment System) synth. I then kinda built it up using another chip tune bass, then brought in a more trance-like bass line. I then added a drum and bass drum track which I made(which I later changed to a more electro sounding track, but havent uploaded yet, due to the shityness of the drum and bass drums). I then added in a few other little chip lines. They're not from Sweet Child of Mine, but I wanted to do this for fun, not to have an accurate chip tune translation of the song.

Womblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01796138268335516331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2563990998237398307.post-54610258868354505012008-02-29T00:23:00.004+00:002008-02-29T00:40:26.765+00:00I'mma Post Some BlogWell, I haven't updated in over a month, main reason, I forgot. 'Nuff said.

Alot has happened. I've finished two modual's at college, Flash animation, and Concept Art. I'm really happy with the Concept artwork I did. If you compare it to the work I was doing at the beginning of the modual, I've improved by leaps and bounds. I did most of the work in a very Manga looking style. I really like the whole Animé/Manga artwork style, and wanted to base my game style around it.

Anyway, enough work. I've started a "band". My friend Kai, Whyte, and Myself. I say band, but we're more of a group. When I think band, I think of a rock band, or a boy band, or a metal band. But I don't really want to limit us to a style. Basically, if we sit there and think, let's make a House track, then we're gonna make a house track. If we wanna make a rock song, we'll make a rock song. We listen to a wide range of music, so we have alot of influences. Recently, me and Kai were listening to Daft Punk's Alive 2007, and heard a part which is very brief, and isn't heard in any other song they've done that we're aware of, however, we want to hear more of it, so we sampled it, and got a drum beat, and played around with chopping the beats up, automating effects, and generally making it our own. After a day's work, we came out with this:

I really like it. It only uses two samples. The said Daft Punk sample which is the main meat of the piece, and the drum beat, which is from Don't Bring Me Down, by ELO. The drum beat was cut up quite alot from it's original 2 second loop, and I think we did a good job of it. I'm buying a load of recording and mixing gear at the end of march, and hopefully a huge P.A system at the end of May.

Also, check out our Myspace page:

www.myspace.com/insomniousbandWomblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01796138268335516331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2563990998237398307.post-25769848585259297622008-01-13T18:51:00.000+00:002008-01-13T19:20:42.035+00:00New Year, New Graphics Card.Well. The LAN party went smoothly, we played Crysis on LAN for 8 hours straight, then had some Counter Strike source fun. Ended our main gaming spree at 6 in the morning. Got about 3 hours sleep, then got up a cracked on with some more Crysis, followed by some Company of Heroes. It was good fun.

My graphics card didn't go as smoothly though...

It didn't come on Wednesday, as was planned, but arrived at the depot on Wednesday instead. They then put it up for 3Day delivery, to arrive on Friday. So, I was waiting on the Friday for it to arrive, at about 4 o'clock, I phoned up and asked them where it was, and they said that I should've been told that the card was out of stock. It was flagged for delivery on Friday, I was told it was coming on Friday, but it was actually going to come on Monday. I asked them if they could change it to another day, since I'd be at college until 5 on Monday, but they said, no, because I'd left it too late to change the date.

Sorry, what? They cocked it up, and then try to blame it on me when I ask them to change the delivery date. Christ, I could understand if I'd just rung them up and asked them out of the blue, but no, they were the ones which buggered it all up, by sending me a duff card in the first place, then wrongly telling me it was coming on Friday, and not telling me it was out of stock.

They tried to deliver it on Monday, but obviously no-one was there. So I phoned them, and asked them to deliver it on Wednesday. Which, to my surprise, they managed without fault. I then fitted the card in my machine, and found out that my motherboard wasn't going to play nice with the new one. Old card back in, online, for some unknown reason, I went back to eBuyer, despite them not being able to provide me with a decent service, and ordered an Asus P5N-E SLi Motherboard. Arrived next day with no trouble at all, replaced my old board, new card back in, and finally, it worked.

I think the original cock up was just a one off. So I'll keep going back there. They have very cheap prices, and free shipping on orders over £45. Which is good, since all my orders tend to be over £50 at least.

Anyway, with that over, I've been having some very good gaming sessions. I've been playing World in Conflict alot, which has some very impressive visuals. Also, I played through Portal again, and booted up Half-Life 2: Episode 2. Now I'd already played HL2 EP2, but I thought I'd whack it up to full, now I can. To everyone who says that graphics don't matter in games, they can shut the hell up, and go back to playing their point and click ASCII games or whatever it is they got that notion from. Playing through EP2 with the settings maxed really adds a whole new level to the game. The real-time shadows, the motion blur, the new particle system. All these new little extras, they really add to the experience, and the atmosphere. When your walking through a dark, area, which is a little spooky, and you turn on your flash light to illuminate the area, it illuminates some things, but it casts shadows on other things, so theres always going to be something hidden. It's not what you can see which is scary, it's what you can't. Which is why the new shadows are a nice little touch. The new particle system is very nice too. When you shoot an Antlion, and it explodes, rather than getting a very false looking 2d sprite, you get a nice big, gooey splat. Which although it's not much, the added realism really adds to the feeling that you're there, fighting that Antlion, rather than just telling some imaginary character what to do.Womblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01796138268335516331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2563990998237398307.post-15130338460241577112007-12-31T12:17:00.001+00:002007-12-31T12:34:15.846+00:00New Year!Well, it's the 31st. I've kept my pc working for the LAN party. I've avoided all urges to overclock, my CPU and Ram, update my BIOS, or do anything which could potentially go horribly wrong. Except of course buy a new Case, PSU and Graphics Card. The Graphics card, which was dead on arrival, got collected today, and I should have a new one the day after this one arrives at their returns department. It should arrive there today, but I'm not sure if they work on new years day, so I'm hoping to have one on Wednesday, however, I wouldn't say no if they tried to give me one tomorrow. A £200 Graphics card is a £200 Graphics card. The sooner the better.

Yesterday I fitted 2 friends new hardware for them. My friend Owen got a new case and Graphics card for christmas, so I fitted them. The case was an Antec P190. It a behemoth of a case. It barely fitted under his desk. But despite it's size, and the 5 Case fans, plus the 8800GT fan, and the Cpu fan, it's almost silent. It's pretty damned heavy too. I like it overall, but I think I'll stick to my Nine Hundred case. It looks like it's got a lot of raw power in it, no matter what you've got in there. Although, by Wednesday, I will have alot of raw power in there.

Another friend, Kai, bought himself, some new Ram, a new Mother Board, and a new CPU. Although that didnt go as smoothly. I put it all together. Somehow got T.I.M in my hair. Plugged it in, and WHOOSH! Nothing happened. The fans came on, but nothing hit the screen. No BIOS beeps. Nothing. Tried the old graphics card, since this happened to my 8800GT, but that didn't work. So, I took it all apart again, put the old stuff back in, and it all worked. Except the HDD got a windows error, and refused to boot up. So, we're going to take his HDD, put it in my pc, back it up, then format the disk, and do a complete reinstall.

I'm hoping that everything goes smoothly tonight. I've checked the Ring main, and we can support the PC's power requirements. I've got a 24 Port LAN switch, even though there's only 2 other people Pc gaming. I've got a few other people hopefully coming along later on to indulge in some Guitar Hero. I'm sure everything will be fine...
Womblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01796138268335516331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2563990998237398307.post-16645236798267660972007-12-28T19:22:00.000+00:002007-12-28T19:26:31.901+00:00Graphics Card TroubleWell, my stuff arrived. The case is brilliant, the PSU works wonders, and the graphics card is bricked. Dead on Arrival. I've tried everything, I've cleared CMOS, I've tried it with bare minimum hardware installed. I've tried using a seperate PSU just the the graphics card. Nothing works. I'm borrowing a friends old Motherboard and Cpu, and testing it out in that. If that works, I'll buy a new Motherboard, if it doesn't, I'll send it back to eBuyer, and ask for a new one. This is really quite annoying, since I need it for New Years Eve. I'm hosting a LAN party, and being the host, being able to run the games is a fairly normal thing to expect, but at this rate, it looks like new years eve could be a bit crap.
Womblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01796138268335516331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2563990998237398307.post-263596180421651032007-12-26T21:49:00.000+00:002007-12-26T22:10:41.165+00:00Mmmmmm... ChristmasWell, seeing as it was me who wanted one, Scan ran out of 8800GT's, so I got the money to buy one when they come back in stock. Which happens to be now. So, With the money for that, and some extra money I got from family, I'm buying an XFX 8800GT Extreme, which has the pre-overclocked Memory, GPU core, and Shader Clock. Should run Crysis nicely. I'm also buying a new 700Watt Arctic Power PSU. It has Dual 22Amp rails, and another rail which I forget the ampage on, but it's the Dual rail which matters to me. The 8800 needs a combined ampage of 26A across all rails, so the 44 + whatever from the other will work nicely.

I'm also buying a new case. It's a really nice case, an Antec Nine Hundred. I was toying between a Cooler Master Stacker, an Antec P182 or 180, or the Nine Hundred. I decided on the Nine Hundred. I've got a P180 sitting in my room which belongs to my mum's boyfriend, which at some point, will come out of the box, and turn into an epic gaming rig. I like it, but I don't really want to open the front to access my drives. So I went against that. The Stacker has a £140 price tag, so that's out of the question, and according to alot of reviews, the Nine Hundred is a very nice case. I like it alot, and the deep blue L.E.D's on the 2 front 120mm fans look cool. Most coloured fans look cheap and nasty, but these are nice, they're a very deep blue, and aren't too bright or over the top. It also has a side window which looks pretty cool. It has a 200mm fan on the top too. and has a nice big inside volume, with separate cages for the PSU, HDD's and main component's. So cooling is very good.

I was also given Crysis, which I've been playing. I really like it. The game area's are huge compared to Farcry, and even on lowest detail, it still looks fantastic. My frame rate in huge gunfights in the middle of forests are questionable, but given the age of my current system, it's still pretty impressive, and mostly playable. I'm ooking forward to Unreal Tournament 3, World in Conflict and Quake War's, which I'll be purchasing tomorrow. Then, in the coming weeks, I'll upgrade my Mother Board, RAM, and Processor. I've got my eye on a Core 2 Duo E6850. It's a damn good piece of kit, and is the best money can buy without jumping into the small fortune range.
Womblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01796138268335516331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2563990998237398307.post-65292737210949138482007-12-18T23:47:00.000+00:002007-12-18T23:56:56.228+00:00Particle TestsI was having a play with 3DS Max, and figured out how to do particles. Yay me.

They both took forever to render. I know there nothing special, but it's the first time I've gotten particles working, and I'm happy with them.
Womblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01796138268335516331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2563990998237398307.post-57737509946301910362007-12-17T14:56:00.000+00:002007-12-17T15:00:55.493+00:00Moar ModelsI was working on another model last night. I started playing with ideas for a handgun. It's turned into something which looks a fair bit like a desert eagle. This is by no means a final model, just me playing with ideas. You've probably noticed that my models have a tendency to not be skinned. I'm not too hot at skinning, so I'd rather leave them un-skinned then make them look crap with a poor skinning job.

Womblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01796138268335516331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2563990998237398307.post-24375558426304029152007-12-16T21:02:00.000+00:002007-12-16T21:20:57.012+00:00ModellingI've been slowly working on a mod for the source engine called UnDead Warfare: The Beginning. It's a prelude to a full game me and a small team are hoping to make. Since I've finally had some free time, I've been working on a few assets. I've been working for it over an evening, and have come out with 2 textures and 2 models. The models need skinning, but the models themselves are finished.

The models are tables for the first scene. Basically, you wake up in a small lab/hospital, and have a flashback to how you got there. Then you get to explore the base your in. Then the alarms sound, and a swarm of zombies rush into the base, and you run for shelter. You then get news over the radio that the base is out of control, and the army are going to nuke the installment, and you hear fighter jets overheard, then a deafening explosion, and bright light fills the room, and the mod ends. I'm toying over making it playable, or a machinima. I think making it playable would be pretty cool, being able to explore the base, and seeing the inner goings on of the base, but a machinima could be better for getting the idea across to people better, as everyone would get the same experience, so everyones on the same page as to whats happening.
Womblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01796138268335516331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2563990998237398307.post-36577098483328792902007-12-06T23:04:00.000+00:002007-12-06T23:07:32.004+00:00Mattrach's the man

Another great guitarist. This guy is really, really good, and has obviously been playing a long time.

This is Eternity Lightwaves from Final Fantasy X-2. Really nice song.

Tomorrow I'll start the carol singing round for this year. Last year, I went quite late, but in the space of 3 evenings, we made just over £300. This year we're going for much longer, obviously the closer to Christmas we go, the more we make, but it's all money. I'm hoping to get hold of an acoustic guitar this year, the extra effort will really increase the amount we make.
Womblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01796138268335516331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2563990998237398307.post-6158816000347615942007-12-01T14:22:00.000+00:002007-12-01T14:58:00.387+00:001st December...It's the first already. 23 and a bit days till Christmas. Well, I'm getting an Nvidia Geforce 8800GT for Christmas, so I'll be set up for the next big line up of games coming out. Yay me!

I went on an all night gaming session last night. Playing lot's of Supreme Commander, Company of Heroes and Crysis. Crysis is great fun on LAN. The nano suit adds a whole other element to game play. You can activate speed and run and jump like the million dollar man, activate shield and become bullet proof to a degree, Stealth and become a chameleon, and Strength, which makes you the equivalent of Chuck Norris on Steroids. The strength enhancement is great fun. As an enemy jeep is hurtling towards you, jump out the way and punching out it's back tire, then watch it hurtle out of control over a cliff is very satisfying.

Company of Heroes is good fun too, although multiplayer consists mostly of, rapidly click the build infantry button, tell them to stand outside the enemy base, then whore artillery for the rest of the game. It kinda takes away the tactical element, and turns it into a game of who can get their units outside each others base the fastest.

Supreme Commander was quite funny. The normal Real Time Spamming guy's didn't like it as much since they didn't like the idea that 1 unit actually cant take on the biggest super power in the world and win hands down. In this, you really have to plan your base well, since if you don't, your mass and power will go into the red whenever you build, and something which should take 10 seconds to build ends up taking 10 minutes to build. The engine is very well made. It can handle upto 1000 units without any slowdown(if your running at least dual core, but it still runs well on a single core cpu), and the units can be huge. There's these flying fortress', which I like to call "doom doughnuts", which hover around and fire sprinkles at enemies. there's also some pretty cool spider things which stomp around and look really menacing until some air units come along and start shooting it, which is quite concerning. This is, after all, very far in the future, and this is my army's best weapon ever built, yet it has no kind of air defense on it what so ever.

I played some more Stalker. That's fun on LAN too, if a bit unbalanced. You get no money until after you spawn, which to buy things, you need to buy it before you spawn, which is pointless. To level up and get better guns, you have to die loads. Meaning if you're a really good player, with lots of kills, and you want to keep your K/D ratio up, you can't. If somebody gets a good sniper riffle, and gets to a good tower, he's guaranteed to win, since the good sniper riffles are one shot kills. Never the less, if you can stay live to get some kills, you'll have fun playing it.

Apparently Guitar Hero 3 is out on PC now, so I'll be swiftly scooping that up. I really like Guitar Hero. I played it on 360 at Video Games live, where I was the first person to play it, EVER! I liked it, but the controller is a bit different. The strum bar is longer, but it sticks out less, so you slip off it much easier. The frets are smaller, which reduces fatigue alot, however, the stickers on them make them sticky, which is a bit strange when playing. The guitar is a bit heavier, Which is nice. It feels alot stronger and well built. It also doesn't creak when you move it too fast, unlike the old one. It's a good fun game. The Pc version doesn't have the nice new Les Paul guitar, it has the old explorer, but I guess it doesn't really matter, I'm more interested in the game than the guitar. I think it'll be best on Pc, since there's bound to be a mod community spring up for it. Custom songs for it will be much appreciated. I used to play Frets on Fire a while back. It's a Guitar Hero clone which comes with 3 songs, but you can add your own, and rip the Guitar Hero song's from the disk. It had a huge community, with loads of custom songs for it. So I'm hoping the community will welcome GH3 too.Womblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01796138268335516331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2563990998237398307.post-64582588438070952422007-11-30T11:08:00.000+00:002007-11-30T11:15:50.566+00:00Heh, FreemanI was playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl, and finally found the Gordon Freeman easter egg. He's laying down dead in a tunnel in Wild Territory. There's shocker anomaly's everywhere, so be careful if you go for a look. He's got short hair, glass's and a goatee, and is called Freeman.

There's loads of games which make Half Life references now. Splinter Cell, Destroy all humans, Stalker, even Lost(the show, not the game).
Womblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01796138268335516331noreply@blogger.com0
